Martha Henderson, a member of our congregation, reflects on the importance of this service:
A Circle of Chairs
Halfway between our energetic Sunday worship services is a space for quiet reflection and communion. At noon on Wednesdays, the vaulted ceiling of the church becomes the sheltering sanctuary for world-weary worshippers. A circle of chairs faces the simple altar table where the elements of communion are laid. A pastor opens with prayer. Peace flows into each soul, a calming mid-week respite. A meditation is offered, thoughts shared, and prayer requests heard. Standing around the table, the worshippers offer the bread of Life and the cup of Salvation to each other. The Lord’s Prayer is recited. We are blessed to go out into the world with the Love of Jesus surrounding us. The half-hour service refocuses us, keeps us “in the flow” of the Spirit, and relights the Christ candle in our hearts. This simple service enlivens our identity as Christians in but not of the world and celebrates our communion with each other. It would be a very long week between Sundays without the blessings of the Wednesday noon service. The circle of chairs is open to all.
The noon service is followed by 20 minutes of Centering Prayer for those who want to stay.
